After a lot of leaks and rumors, Samsung has launched its Galaxy S23 smartphone lineup. The South-Korean tech giant finally launched Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra along with Galaxy Books 3 Series at the Unpacked event 2023. Last year’s Samsung Galaxy S22 Series were very capable in terms of performance, looks, and cameras. The S22 Ultra was one of the best flagship Android phones you can buy in 2022. It would be interesting to see how the Galaxy S23 series will supersede the existing S22 lineup. Let’s take a closer look at the all-new Samsung Galaxy S23 specifications and features.
Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus: Design and Display
There are slight changes in the exterior design of the Galaxy S23 (long-term review) and S23 Plus. Both phones come with a slightly boxier design. While not a huge change in design, it’s one that may impact how the Galaxy S23 feels to hold, as its harsher edges may give users a better grip on their devices. The camera design on the S23 has changed slightly as well. On the
Galaxy S22, all of the lenses and sensors sat on a raised island and now they appear to be following the floating camera design just like S22 Ultra. It seems like these might be the only things that can distinguish the S23 from the S22 at a quick glance. The Galaxy S23’s display is a 6.1-inch 1080 x 23450 panel, while the S23 Plus comes in a 6.6-inch size. Both displays provide 1750 nits brightness which is an upgrade from their predecessors.
Samsung Galaxy S23 and S23+ come with AMOLED 2x screens with 120Hz refresh rates which are exactly similar to S22 and S22+. There are small upgrades in the refresh rates as they can drop as low as 24Hz, which conserves battery when speedy refreshes aren’t needed. To protect those displays, the Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus come with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 which will save your new Galaxy smartphones from daily drops and bumps. Moreover, both phones are IP68 and dust resistant which means you can easily carry them on your adventures, be it a beach or a desert safari.
The devices come in a choice of eight colors: Phantom Black, Cream, Green, and Lavender. These are the main colors. But if you buy directly from Samsung’s website you’ll get access to some exclusive colors like Lime, Sky Blue, Graphite, and Red.
Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus: Cameras
Samsung is known as one of the leaders in smartphone photography and things aren’t different in the Galaxy S23 series. The most exciting update is in the S23 Ultra which brings the much-rumored 200MP ISOCELL HP1 camera. However, the cameras in S23 and S23+ are pretty much similar to S22 and S22+ with a main 50MP OIS shooter, 10MP 3x telephoto, and 12MP wide angle lens. You’ll get 3x optical zoom, while the camera’s digital zoom features go up to 30x zoom. Samsung has included the Nightography enhanced AI that is specifically made to enhance dark, low-light photos and overall better performance.
On the front Samsung has equipped both phones with brand new 12MP f2.2 selfie cameras that can record up to 4K 60fps HDR10+ videos. The front camera comes with Dual Pixel technology that captures selfies faster and more accurately. The rear camera can record up to 8K videos at 30 fps and 4K videos at up to 60 fps.
Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus: Performance, Storage, and Battery
Unlike the design of these phones, Samsung keeps its internal specs pretty consistent throughout all models. For the S23 series, Samsung and Qualcomm together have created an optimized Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy. The company claims that the custom-designed CPU boosts the performance of the S23 series by about 30% as compared to Galaxy S22. Another significant improvement is in the GPU, which is approx. 41% faster than the S22 series and will provide an amazing user experience for gamers. Furthermore, we can expect better gaming performance because of Ray Tracing support in
compatible games. Both S23 and S23+ come with 8GB RAM with upgradable memory up to 512GB.
When it comes to battery both models have a difference of 800mAh. While the Galaxy S23 comes with a 3900mAh battery, the S23 Plus comes with a 4700mAh battery. There’s 25W charging on the Galaxy S23 and 45W fast charging on Galaxy S23 Plus along with 15W wireless charging support in both models. Both phones come with the latest Android 13, along with Samsung’s own version One UI 5.1. For security Samsung Knox is still there, keeping your sensitive info under lock and key. Samsung is promising 5 years of security updates and 4 generations of Android updates which is still great news for Android devices.
