In the months of March and April 2020, Sony had already revealed several details and specifications regarding its next-generation gaming console, PlayStation 5. All this had begun when Sony released the PS5 logo in the month of January this year. Now, Sony has released the first look of its PS5 and the DualSense Controller at the global online-only launch event on June 11, 2020. The event primarily showed off an exciting range of the games that will be coming to this latest PlayStation. The lineup includes an incredible mix of sequels to the top sellers and a list of new titles from Sony’s biggest first-party studios.

Sony showed the first look of the PS5 Design

After almost an hour of showing the next-gen games, Sony revealed the first look of the actual game console. The PS5 has a dual-tone design featuring a black core with white edges, a glossy curved center, and a blue glow. One of the most capturing highlights was the announcement of the two versions of the PlayStation 5. The Standard version with a 4K Blu-ray disc drive and a slightly slimmer, Digital Edition, with no disc drive. The PS5 can be placed horizontally as well as vertically, using the black base stand. 

PS5 Specifications 

Sony had already revealed the specifications of the PlayStation 5 in the month of March. The PS5 will be powered by an eight-core AMD ZEN 2 CPU and a custom AMD RDNA 2-based GPU. It will fully support 3D audio, 4K graphics at 120Hz refresh rate, and the PS5 will also have support for 8K gameplay, which will, of course, depend upon the supported TV and HDMI cable that’s being connected.

One of the worth mentioning features of the PS5 is the switch to the SSD storage for the console’s main hard drive. PlayStation 5 is equipped with a custom-designed Ultra high-speed SSD to level-up the processing speeds and reduce the load times. In fact, Epic Games stated that the SSD of PS5 is so fast that the developer had to rework on the gameplay demo of Unreal Engine 5 to take full advantage of it. It’s claimed that the data processing capabilities of the PS5 are approx 100 times faster than the PS4. In short, games will load super-fast and players will experience a great level of immersion in the games.

PS5 DualSense Controller

The DualSense Controller has a similar dual-tone color scheme to match the aesthetic of PS5. It has the same four face buttons and center-mounted touchpad like the DualShock 4. In addition, there’s a dash of blue color on the sides of the central touchpad. Sony has introduced some big changes in its new DualSense Controller. The old rumble technology has been replaced by the haptic feedback and the L2 and R2 shoulder buttons are equipped with new adaptive triggers that can adjust the resistance of the triggers according to the gameplay. 

The DualSense Controller will have a USB-C charging port, a built-in microphone, and an integrated speaker. Therefore, the players can now do away their external headsets to communicate with friends. The Share button has been renamed as the “Create” button, which allows the players to create epic gameplay content to share with the world. 

PS5 Accessories

Besides its next-gen gaming console and an amazing lineup of the games, Sony has also announced a new slate of the PS5 accessories. All the accessories will feature the same two-tone design to match the PlayStation 5 and the DualSense Controller. The company has given a bit of information on these accessories as what the customers can expect. Let’s have a look:

1. PULSE 3D Wireless Headset that features dual noise-canceling headphones and offers 3D audio support.  
2. HD Camera featuring dual 1080p sensors that allow the players to stream footage while playing. 
3. Media Remote is basically a remote control with an integrated microphone to navigate and stream services with ease.
4. DualSense Charging Station for charging up to two DualSense Controllers, There’s a separate accessory dock to connect the controllers with the charging station.

The prices and release date of these accessories haven’t been revealed yet.

Will PS5 be Backward-compatible?

Sony has confirmed that PlayStation 5 will be backward compatible with the PS4 games. Both the game consoles have built upon a similar internal architecture, therefore, the PS5 owners will be able to play the PS4 games on their device. This is such comforting news for the players who were really disappointed as they couldn’t play the PS3, PS2, and PS1 games on their PlayStation 4. There’s another exciting news, apart from the cross-generational play feature, the PS4 games will run faster on the PS5. All the credit goes to the Solid State Drive (SSD) in PS5, as compared to the hard drives in the current PS4 devices. 

PS5 Games Announced

Sony showed off an hour of games from its first and third-party developers at the launch event. More than 2 dozen games were shown, which included some big-name studios like Bethesda and Capcom. Interestingly, amongst the top games announced at the event, there were two sequels to the best selling games of the PS4- Spiderman: Miles Morales and Horizon: Forbidden West. The ultra-popular open-world game, Grand Theft Auto V is also coming to PlayStation 5 and the PS5 owners will get a game’s online component, GTAV Online, for free when the game launches in 2021. Also, the current PS4 GTA V owners will get $1 million in GTA cash every month until the PS5 port comes out in 2021.

Destiny 2 will also be available on the PS5, and the PS4 owners will be able to upgrade to the latest version of this game for free. Plus, Destiny 2 also supports cross-play across generations, therefore, both the PS4 and PS5 users will be able to play this game together. All the PS5 games were focused on delivering improved visuals, faster loading times, and an enhanced sense of immersion while playing the games.

PS5 Price and Release Date 

Now, coming to the most-awaited question- when will the PlayStation 5 be available? Right now, Sony hasn’t revealed the exact date for the release of its PS5, but it has confirmed a Holiday 2020 window. Therefore, we can expect the PlayStation 5 to launch alongside Microsoft’s Xbox Series X, before the end of 2020. 

Also, Sony hasn’t mentioned the price tag for the PS5 in the launch event. The company has just mentioned that the price of the feature-packed PS5 is sure to attract gamers. Undoubtedly, the reasonable price tag was one of the most important aspects of driving such a whopping sales number of PS4. We can hope the PS5 to come within an affordable price bracket after we’ve seen the successes of the PS4 and the struggles for pricey PS3. Also, we might expect the PS5 Digital Edition to be priced lesser than the standard version with a 4K Blu-ray disc drive.
